Team Average Golf Format

The Team Average format is a straightforward team golf game where each player plays their own ball and the team’s score is the average of all members’ individual round totals. It’s a fair way to measure overall team strength since one bad round doesn’t dominate the result — it gets diluted by the average. You can also configure it to average only the best rounds, dropping the worst performers.

The Rules

  1. Each player on the team plays their own ball for the entire round.
  2. At the end of the round, each player’s total score is calculated.
  3. The team’s score is the average of all members’ individual totals.
  4. The team with the best average score wins.
Configurable: You can optionally set the number of rounds to include in the average. For example, on a 4-person team you could average only the best 3 of 4 rounds, dropping the worst score before averaging.

Example Round

A four-person team plays 18 holes using stroke play, averaging all 4 rounds:

Individual Round Totals
A Player A shoots 78
B Player B shoots 82
C Player C shoots 74
D Player D shoots 86
Team score: (74 + 78 + 82 + 86) ÷ 4 = 80.0

If the team had configured “best 3 of 4,” Player D’s 86 would be dropped:

Best 3 of 4
(74 + 78 + 82) ÷ 3 = 78.0
Team score: 78.0

Scoring Options

Team Average supports three scoring methods for individual rounds:

Stroke Play (default)

Each player counts their total strokes. The team score is the average of those totals. Lowest average wins.

Stableford

Each player earns Stableford points per hole. The team score is the average of all players’ point totals. Highest average wins.

Quota

Each player plays against their personal quota (based on handicap). The team score is the average of all players’ quota results.

Handicap Options

Handicaps are off by default in Team Average, but can be enabled for a more equitable competition between teams of different skill levels.

Net Score

Each player’s net score (gross minus handicap strokes) is used. The team average is then calculated from the net totals.

Compare With Lowest

The lowest handicap player in the group plays at scratch, and all other players receive strokes relative to that player.

Setting Up in Squabbit

To create a Team Average game in Squabbit:

  1. Create a new tournament or casual game.
  2. Under format, choose Team Average.
  3. Set your team size. The default is 4 players per team.
  4. Optionally set the number of rounds to include in the average (leave blank to use all).
  5. Choose your scoring type: Stroke Play, Stableford, or Quota.
  6. Optionally enable handicaps if teams have mixed skill levels.
  7. Add players and assign them to teams.

During the round, each player enters their own scores on their own scorecard. After the round, Squabbit automatically calculates the average and displays the team score rounded to one decimal place.

Tip: Team Average works well for larger team events where you want every player’s round to count equally. Unlike formats like LIV or Best Ball that drop lower scores, the default Team Average includes everyone.
